Artist's statement

Everyone has a different personality, but there is a certain type of people who can easily perceive some seemingly insignificant happiness. However, there also comes pain that ordinary people cannot detect. They are known as HSPs (Highly Sensitive Persons). I think that HSPs are like butterflies. They are fragile, but their emotions are as rich as the wings of butterflies.

We know that the brain controls what we do, but can we control our emotions by ourselves? Or are our emotions firmly restricted by the outside world? There are two ways to interpret this installation: whether HSPs are the manipulators or the manipulated of emotions.

As an HSP myself, I often feel that my energy is consumed by emotional changes. I hope to use this project to help others understand HSPs and to offer healing and empathy to those who are HSPs.

This work was selected for a Silver Award by a judging panel of faculty from the Royal College of Art, Central Saint Martins, Parsons, Yale and RISD.
