Artist's statement

The theme of cultural identity and diversity is inspired by the increasing cultural exchange of globalisation. Amid the collision of Eastern and Western cultures, we reflect on the impact of cultural identity on individuals and society. After discussion, we selected Peking Opera and divination as a pair of seemingly opposing yet mutually inspiring cultures. Peking Opera showcases vibrant colours and intricate costumes, symbolising a rich historical and cultural heritage, while Western divination, through tarot cards and astrology, reflects humanity's desire to explore the future and the unknown.

We were inspired by Alphonse Mucha, particularly his Zodiac series. Its pearl-adorned accessories reminded us of the traditional headpieces in Chinese opera costumes, creating a cultural collision. For the Peking Opera figures we used warm, vivid tones of red, white and blue; for the divination section, softer browns, silvers and golds to create a sense of mystery and dreaminess. Cultural sensitivity was an important consideration throughout, and we aimed to avoid misunderstanding or stereotypes of either culture.

Through this artwork, we hope to provoke reflection on how individuals can find their unique identity in a multicultural world, and how mutual understanding can be promoted through cultural fusion.
