Artist's statement
This work deconstructs the romanticized portrayal of nudity and clothing in Jean Honoré Fragonard's Diana and Endymion. In this painting, fabrics seem to accentuate rather than conceal the body, reinforcing the male gaze.
My work transforms the body into a rigid platform and clothing into geometric stairs, symbolizing how garments guide perception. Each step reflects the causality between dressing, undressing, and objectification. By stripping away the softness and sensual allure of the original composition, this work presents a stark, unembellished exploration of the gaze. It invites viewers to confront the ways art has historically framed the body, transforming passive observation into critical reflection.
This work was selected for a Gold Award by a judging panel of faculty from the Royal College of Art, Central Saint Martins, Parsons, Yale and RISD.
